APC KO of First Edition TF Prime Optimus Prime Toy Review

Class- Voyager

When Transformers Prime came out, I wasn't collecting Transformers at the time. Also, aside for the first episode, I really didn't watch the show faithfully until half way through season 2. I have the Voyager Beast Hunters Optimus, but it's not the best figure honestly. Its hollow and too small. So I really didn't have much interest in getting Prime Optimus. Then I saw some reviews for the regular voyager, and I'm kind of glad I didn't get it. Things changed when I saw a video review for First Edition Prime. He looked really good, but that was 2019 and I wasn't going to spend almost 100 bucks for yet another Optimus Prime. Also, I wanted to have 2 guns, so that would've set me back at least another 15-20 bucks. When I learned about the APC KO of FE Optimus, I absolutely fell in love with it, and it was only 40 dollars to get. Is it worthy to be in a collection????

Bot Mode-

As many things are wrong with Beast Hunters Optimus is how many things are done right with the First Edition Optimus. He looks really good, just like his animation model, but I know the colors are just a little different from the actual release so you can tell them apart. Also, and some people may not realize this, but the quality of the plastic isn't as good as the Hasbro version. I would rate it 90% as good. It isn't going to crumble in your hands if you transform it and it is solid enough to give to a kid to play with. Optimus Prime looks like the typical Optimus Prime. Red torso with windows on his chest. Blue helmeted head. blue boots. Wheels on his legs. Red arms. He looks REALLY good and there is a significant amount of articulation. Legs can move up and down and in and out. He has about 90 degrees of bend at the elbows and knees. Like most TFP (Transformers Prime) he has an open hand instead of closed fists. His hands have 5mm holes. The mold is great, and holds up very well to 2020 standards. He's probably one of my favorite TFP figures in my collection if not THE favorite. Honestly, in 2019, I had a rule of no more Optimus Prime figures. I was happy to break that rule with this figure.

I'm used to CHUG style figures more than anything and they have their own "poetry" to them. TFP figures are just a little different, there's a lot more folding panels than a CHUG figure. The first time I transformed Optimus, i needed to use the video for one part (mainly because the instructions that come with him are really bad). But once you transform him once or twice, it's pretty easy to do. Also, the transformation is unique enough where it is a lot of fun. For complexity, I rate it a 7.25 out of 10. For fun, an 8 out of 10

Vehicle Mode-

This has nothing to do with the vehicle mode of the toy, and more the design of the vehicle mode in the show. I prefer Optimus Prime to be more of the flat nose truck from G1. Only recently did I start liking the movieverse, so now I accept the longnose version as a potential Optimus. My problem is not how the toy pulls it off though. The figure is really cool in vehicle mode, albeit a little plain. The truck is primarily red with silver exhaust pipes. There are smokey clear blue windows. yellow lights above the window. the grill is a little basic looking by being light gray, it would've looked really nice with some silver. It rolls well. Honestly, it isn't my favorite vehicle mode, but it is far from my least favorite. I may look to see if Toyhax has some stickers or something. It holds together well, it rolls well. Another small problem is, there is no trailer. In my school of thought, Optimus Prime needs a trailer. In TFP he used a trailer a few times. But the original version didn't come with a trailer, so I accept that this one doesnt. Honestly, I am nitpicking a little bit. It really is a fun vehicle mode.

This is where the KO is better than the original release. The original figure came with a gun, and a sword. yay... The KO comes with 2 guns (which is good because he double gunned many times in the show) and 2 swords. Both guns and swords clip onto his hand securely and make it look like they are part of the hand. Also, the KO comes with a KO of the Dr Wu Star Saber (click here to read a review of the actual Dr Wu Star Saber). yes, a ko of a 3p accessory. If you look at both swords together, you will see that the KO version is just a little bigger and you can tell them apart. Honestly, i really like it. The final accessory that comes with this figure is a new head. You can swap this head with the regular head. It is an unmasked Optimus head. Honestly, I don't really like it. I love the concept don't get me wrong, but the execution is a little bit to be desired. Just let me explain. The mouth isn't deep enough and it could use just a little black paint on the mouth. It is too shallow and it really blends in. So it just doesn't work for me. So I just never installed it and I'm good with that.

3rd Party Add Ons-

Honestly, this is one of my favorite figures of 2019. The only reason it didn't hit the list is because it was originally designed in 2009 or 2010. It holds up really well. for a KO, the plastic quality is really good. AMAZING accessory assortment

Minor problem, the 2nd head

What Changes Would I Make?

Considering the APC Megatron is a bit bigger, I would've made this figure closer in size. Also, the 2nd head I would've made a little nicer so you could've had the option of either mask or mouth face. These are both small details that would make it better, but the figure is already almost perfect as it is.s

Phenominal figure. This is just plain amazing. Why spend 100 for a "real" figure when you can get a really good KO for 40 dollars that comes with more stuff. I rate it an 8.75 out of 10

Retools and Repaints-

There are two Black Primes coming out in 2020 with this mold. One is painted like RID Scourge/Car Robots Black Convoy. The other one is less traditional. I may get one or both, not 100% sure yet

June 2020 there will be a Silver/Chrome Detailed Optimus (5-18-20)
