G1 Cartoon

Beachcomber just shows up as an Autobot in season two.  It is never established where he came from.  Beachcomber was one of the more interesting Autobots since he was given a little more characterization than others..  While he was an Autobot warrior, he also valued nature and science.  He was shown with a little more depth than just a grunt.  He also had a laid back personality.

In his first appearance, he is shown in the Ark with the Autobots, Spike, and Chip Chase trying to understand the nature of time portals opening up.  Beachcomber offers his geology knowledge, but I am sure that temporal mechanics are not related to rocks.  Beachcomber travels to Dinobot Island with several other Autobots to investigate the island’s connection to time portals opening up.  When the Autobots arrive on Dinobot Island, they quickly see the Decepticons stealing the island’s energy.  Megatron hits Optimus Prime with his cannon, and the rest of the Autobots attack the Decepticons.  Beachcomber battles, but he really wishes he was studying the island.  He fires on the Decepticons with energy blasts from his hands.  Blitzwing transforms into tank mode and shoots Beachcomber.  Warpath transforms to defend Beachcomber. Beachcomber sees an opening and transforms to escape from Blitzwing.  Blitzwing continues to fire at Beachcomber until Warpath hits him.   The Decepticons are starting to win the battle.  The Autobots are on the ground and the Decepticons are unleashing the full power of their weapons on the damaged Autobots.  The Autobots are facing destruction.  They are saved when the Dinobots join the battle with the dinosaurs of the island.  The Decepticons are defeated and retreat.

Hound leads Beachcomber and Bumblebee on a mission over rough terrain. A park ranger and Spike ride inside of Beachcomber.  Together, the Autobots examine trees that look like they have been eaten by large creatures.  Beachcomber does most of the analysis due to his scientific background.  He quickly realizes that the Insecticons ate the trees.  The ranger gets a call from another ranger who is watching the Insecticons eat redwoods.  Beachcomber and the Autobots transform to engage the Insecticons.  The second park ranger frantically drives away from the Insecticons and almost runs the Autobots off the road.  When the Autobots reach the feasting Insecticons, they are immediately attacked.  Beachcomber takes point in the battle and Hound follows.  For some reason the Autobots decide to retreat.  The Insecticons follow and try to roll a colossal log at the Autobots.  The log destroys everything in it’s path.  The Autobots run to a stream to escape and are trapped by the waterfall in front of them.  The log hits the Autobots and they tumble off the waterfall, or so it seems.  Hound created a hologram to deceive the Insecticons.  Beachcomber, Hound, and Bumblebee race to the Nova Power Plant to assist the Autobots who are trying to defend it from the Insecticons and Decepticons.  Spike rides inside of Beachcomber and then sits on his shoulder.  Beachcomber follows Optimus into battle when the Autobots try to make a final push to defend the power plant from the Decepticons and Insecticons.  The Autobots retreat back to the Ark once the wounded are loaded into Optimus Prime’s trailer.  As the Autobots speed away, the Decepticons continue to fire their weapons at them.  The Autobots roll back into action very quickly.  They learn that the energy which the Insecticons consumed will make them explode.  Also, the Decepticons and Insecticons are attacking a facility to steal a combat computer.  The Autobots race to save the Insecticons and stop the Decepticons. When the Autobots reach Iron Mountain, the Decepticons enter the facility while the Insecticons fight the Autobots.  Early in the battle, Shrapnel fires his blaster at rocks above the Autobots.  It causes a rock slide which temporarily incapacitates the Autobots.  Optimus Prime is the first to free himself and uses his blaster to free the rest of the trapped Autobots.  Optimus Prime and Megatron work together to prevent the Insecticons from exploding.  The Insecticons fly away with the Decepticons chasing them.

Beachcomber battles the Decepticons with the bulk of the Autobot force after Megatron thought the Autobots were dead.  The Autobots prove to be too powerful and the Decepticons retreat.

Beachcomber goes to New York City with the Autobots to be part of the Crime Buster campaign.  The Autobots are getting involved in stopping local crimes.  Beachcomber is stationed inside of Sparkplug’s garage which acts as a mobile base for the Autobots.  He is monitoring the computer for any crime or Decepticon activity that the Autobots may need to involve themselves with.

Powerglide, Perceptor, Warpath, Seaspray, and Beachcomber travel to the beach together to explore.  The group of Autobots are attacked by Blitzwing, Ramjet, and Thrust.  The Autobots leap into battle to defend themselves.  Being one of the few Autobots who doesn’t like to fight, Beachcomber hides and discovers a hidden valley.  The valley is secluded and is filled with all types of animal life.  Despite coming from a mechanical planet, Beachcomber feels at home in the valley.  He exhibits an ability to speak to any type of living creature when he talks to a bird that lands on his shoulder.  More birds land on Beachcomber, then rabbits and deer approach him peacefully.  Beachcomber is truly happy in this paradise.  Beachcomber’s sensors (a glowing panel in his chest) lead him to a golden lagoon filled with a substance called Electrum.  Electrum has the ability to coat a Transformer and make them invulnerable to any attack.  He sticks his hand in the Electrum pool and coats his hand with the substance.  Beachcomber quickly understands that he can’t let anyone gain control of the Electrum.  He wants to keep the valley hidden, but the battle outside the valley starts to make it’s way into paradise.  Rocks start to fall in the valley, and as Beachcomber is trying to escape, a massive boulder falls on him.  He gets up, transforms into vehicle mode, and leaves the valley.  He makes his way back to the beach and helps Perceptor fight Ramjet.  Perceptor asks where Beachcomber was, but Beachcomber wants to keep the Electrum and the valley a secret.  Ramjet strafes the two Autobots and they try to run away.  He flies into them and they are knocked down.  Perceptor tries to help Beachcomber lift himself up, but Thrust lands on the beach.  The Decepticon discovered the lagoon and his whole body is covered in Electrum.  Perceptor attacks, but does no damage to Thrust.   Warpath makes a hole in a rock formation and Powerglide and Beachcomber follow him to escape.  Beachcomber gathers outside of Omega Supreme with the Autobots so they can start a rescue mission to recover Perceptor and Seaspray.  Smokescreen realizes something is strange with Beachcomber.  Beachcomber keeps his Electrum covered golden hand a secret from the Autobots.  Beachcomber stays behind and quickly realizes the Decepticons found the pool of Electrum when they attack the Ark.  The Decepticons defeat the Autobots, but they let all of the Autobots survive.  Beachcomber returns to the hidden valley and finds that the Decepticons wrecked it with their weapons.  Also, the Decepticons have returned to the valley and are in the Electrum pond.  Beachcomber is discovered by Blitzwing.  Blitzwing uses his gun to surround Beachcomber with a tractor beam.  Beachcomber hides in the ceiling of his cell to try to escape.  When the Decepticons open the cage to gather him, he steals their weapons and frees Perceptor and Seaspray.  Beachcomber uses the stolen laser rifle to blast a hole in the hull of the Decepticon base.  The hallway fills up with water and the Autobots swim to freedom.  Perceptor, Beachcomber, and Seaspray prepare to tell the Autobots about the Electrum pool, but before they can, Optimus Prime and the Autobots arrive.  Earlier, Powerglide found the pool and reported back to the Autobots.  Once Optimus Prime arrives with the Autobots, Beachcomber dives into the Electrum pool.   The Electrum coated Autobots fight the Electrum coated Decepticons, but neither side is able to damage the other.  During the battle, the Decepticons’ Electrum wears off and they are forced to retreat.  Unfortunately, the beautiful valley that hid the Electrum poll was destroyed in the battle.

Beachcomber goes on a mission with the Autobots to a jungle valley.  They want to save Cosmos and prevent an infestation of Morphobots from spreading.   Once the Autobots rescue Cosmos from the Morphobots, Megatron has Dirge, Ramjet and Blitzwing fly into the valley to steal the Insecticide.  The Autobots defend themselves from the ground.  The Decepticons destroy the insecticide, but the Morphobots attack them.  Soon, the swarm of Insecticons and their clones travel to the valley.  The Morphobots eat the Insecticon clones prompting the Decepticons and Insecticons to fly away.  The Autobots send the Morphobots into space where they can’t hurt anyone or anything on Earth.

Beachcomber joins the Autobots when they watch a soap opera called “As the Kitchen Sinks”.  The show is interrupted by a special bulletin reported by Hector Ramirez (who originally was a character in GI Joe).  The Autobots are disappointed that their favorite show was preempted.  A top secret Soviet jet was stolen, and the Soviet Union is blaming the United States.  Optimus Prime doesn’t think that the Decepticons are involved.  Optimus Prime turns the broadcast off and mentions that he is worried that Tracks and Bumblebee haven’t checked in. .  Optimus Prime has the Autobots transform and look for Tracks and Bumblebee.  While patrolling the nearby city, Beachcomber is forced to stop by a toll booth.  Beachcomber deposits the proper toll into a basket and returns to vehicle mode.  The toll booth’s basket is actually a trap made by Lord Chumley to capture the Autobots so he can hunt Optimus Prime.  The basket extends itself and grabs Beachcomber.  Two other claws emerge from the ground and restrain Beachcomber.  He is now a prisoner of Lord Chumley’s.  Inside of Lord Chumley’s estate, Beachcomber is kept on a rotating disc covered by gravel.  It is unclear why Beachcomber didn’t just transform and escape.  Optimus Prime overcomes all of Chumley’s traps and frees Beachcomber and the other Autobots.  Once the Autobots are rescued, they rush Astrotrain and Blitzwing, forcing them to retreat into the air.

After Megatron captures Perceptor to cure his Cosmic Rust, Megatron is willing to release Perceptor back to the Autobots.  Beachcomber goes with the Autobots to save Perceptor.

Beachcomber is shorted out when an energy creature called Kremzeek attacks the Autobots.

Beachcomber's final episode is the season 3 saga "Five Faces of Darkness" when he helps the other minibots defend the Ark from Trypticon.

Marvel G1 Comic

In the G1 Marvel Comics comic book, Beachcomber was introduced as an Autobot who stayed on Cybertron after Optimus Prime left on The Ark. Beachcomber is a scientist first and a warrior second.

He was a resistance fighter led by Perceptor.  When Blaster comes to Perceptor for help in saving a captured Autobot spy, Beachcomber agrees to help Blaster, with several other members of the resistance.  After an unsuccessful search, Beachcomber disobeys Perceptor’s orders and is part of the Autobot team that saves Blaster from The Smelting Pool.

Beachcomber then is part of the attack force which attacks Straxus’ space bridge experiment.  He is shot in the arm by a nameless Decepticon.  His wounds aren’t fatal and he continues to fight.  After Blaster defeats Straxus, Beachcomber is trapped on Earth and captured by Circuit Breaker.  Weeks later he is set free by Circuit Breaker and joins the main team of Autobots.
