CHUG Jhiaxus Toy Review

Class- Deluxe

Commentary-

I’m going to say this first, I love Jhiaxus.  He was a kick ass character in the Marvel G2 book, and was an important character in Re-Generation One.  IDW brought him into their main universe, but to me, that character wasn’t Jhiaxus (but he was a cool character).  In the early 2000s, there was a KB Toys exclusive of Jhiaxus, but that was just a repaint of Beast Machines Jetstorm.  So, when I started to expand my collection beyond G1 Season 1-3, I knew I had to get Generations Jhiaxus.  But he isn’t the Jhiaxus I knew as a kid, he was a retool of the Deluxe CHUG Armada Starscream character.  Is this figure worthy of the Jhiaxus name?

Bot Mode-

So this isn’t the Jhiaxus figure I’ve wanted since the 1990s.  He looks NOTHING like the G2 or Re-Generation One version of the character.  Where the G2 Jhiaxus was menacingly large, bulky, and intimidating looking, this figure is a retool of a deluxe Armada Starscream figure.  He is made to look like his IDW incarnation, not his G2 version.  And that bothers me.

But the figure is a good figure, especially if you don’t have the CHUG Armada Starscream figure.  On a side note, the IDW book actually explains why Jhiaxus looks like Starscream. He is retooled enough where he is somewhat his own figure, but he looks more like Armada Starscream than I’d like.  He is primarily vivid orange with a blue cockpit, some clear parts on his back, and a new Jhiaxus looking head.  He also has a gray backpack and some other black and gray details throughout the figure.  His articulation is good, but not great.  He has good movement in his arms, shoulders, and elbows.  Good movement in his legs.  The wings on his back can move.  He has wrist swivel but no waist swivel.  An interesting feature is, he has mini con ports on his arms.  But this makes sense because he is a retool of CHUG Armada Starscream.

Transformation-

For complexity, I rate his transformation a 7.5 out of 10 and for fun, I rate his transformation a 6.25 out of 10.

Vehicle Mode-

In vehicle mode, Jhiaxus is a Cybertronian Jet.  Its okay, its adequate, but again, it looks more like an orange Armada Starscream than Jhiaxus.  He is still the vivid orange and has a lot more of the gray details.  Again, I like him, but not as much as I should.  His guns from Bot mode peg into each wing, which is a feature I like.  It is always good to have weapon storage.  He’s a fun toy, but very lackluster.

Accessories-

He comes with two hand guns, which oddly resemble the guns that AOE/TLK Crosshairs has, but I believe they are new molds.  He also has two missiles.

Pros-

As disappointing as he is, he’s still a Jhiaxus figure, and I love the character.  He is much better than the one that came out in the early 2000s.  I do like his guns.

Cons-

This figure is far from the idea I have when I think of Jhiaxus.  Where I think of Jhiaxus as being a large, imposing character, this figure is thin, too small (he is a smaller sized deluxe), and just looks like an orange Starscream with a new head.

Grade-

This was an interesting review to write.  Before I started writing it, I really liked the figure, but the more I wrote, the more I realized that it really is an inferior figure and the only reason I own it is because it is the better figure out of two not great figures.  If I didn’t really like the character, 95% chance I would’ve skipped the figure all together.  I hope one day they make a proper Jhiaxus that is at least voyager sized and doesn’t look like Starscream.  I almost would accept the original Armada Starscream retooled as Jhiaxus before the CHUG version, at least that figure had some heft to it.  If you like the character, pick him up, but if you have no connection to the character, he is an easy pass.  I rate him a 5 out of 10.  He will stay in my collection until the day we get a proper Jhiaxus and hopefully some sort of G2 army to go with him. It'll probably never happen, but I would love if some KO company made an upsized KO of the figure
