Combiner Wars Powerglide Toy Review

Class- Scout/Basic

Even as a kid, I never was a big Powerglide fan. He was okay, and like most of the Season 2 people, he was given a little more characterization. But Powerglide felt like an asshole to me. I had the Voyager CHUG Powerglide, but he was too big. I had the OS KO of CW Powerglide as well, but something about it made me not love it. So in January of 2020, I broke down and got the proper Powerglide for my collection.

Bot Mode-

I'm just going to get it out of the way, I like CW Powerglide, but I far from love the figure. Its fine, it hits the right notes, but in comparison to lets say POTP Windcharger or TR Brawn, he just doesn't hold up (i'll get there in a minute). Powerglide looks like G1 Powerglide, but in comparison to figures which came out only 3 years later, he is lacking. In comparison to other Combiner Wars Scouts, it doesn't compare well. He is a short little guy which is fine because the source material has him as being short. His engineering is a bit lacking, only a little more complex than the G1 minibot. He is primarily red with a red autobot logo on his chest and a gray face. His arms are the same gray and his thighs are as well. His articulation is a bit lacking. He doesn't have as much elbow bend as I'd like, his head can only turn slightly, the arms just feel awkward and fall off. His legs are fine though. For a scout, he's ok, but I've been pampered way too much in the last 6 years from some really great figures.

Transformation is a bit more complicated than I originally thought. It isn't hard at all and pretty fulfilling, but its a scout figure so you really don't even need to read the instructions to transform him. For complexity, I rate his transformation a 4 out of 10. For fun, a 5 out of 10.

Vehicle Mode-

Vehicle mode is a little better than robot mode, but he has the same problem as G1 Powerglide (to some). Powerglide's vehicle actually isn't a glider, it is an A-10 Warthog. A plane which the army uses for Air to Ground combat. So ideally, a figure with that vehicle mode should be at least Deluxe if not Voyager. But again, the source material is that he is a small red plane/glider, so I accept it (seriously, I do, it isn't a con at all to me). So Powerglide is a red plane with a black gun on his nose. No real articulation at all. It's fine, but nothing special.

Weapon Mode-

Powerglide can transform into a gun which can be held by a combiner. Since in G1 he never was part of a combiner group, I never did it. Probably never will.

He doesn't come with any, but I gave him the pistol which came with Age of Extinction Hound.

3rd Party Add Ons-

For the options we have, CW Powerglide is a fine figure.

The head articulation is very lacking and this is a big deal to me. Also, in comparison to other figures that came out around the same time, he is no where near as good.

Powerglide is fine. He isn't my favorite and if there was a small deluxe (think Earthrise Cliffjumper), I'd be very happy to get it. But until there is a better option, this is my Powerglide. I rate him a 5 out of 10.

Retools and Repaints-

Combiner Wars Air VIper (a Cobra from GI Joe themed redeco)

G2 Powerglide (redeco in the G2 Aerialbots box set)
