Ectotron Toy Review

I'm a child of the 80s. As a kid, Ghostbusters was probably one of my favorite movies. I saw it easily 30 times if not more. But when I learned about Ectotron, I wasn't sure if I wanted to pick it up. I just wasn't 100% sold on combining Transformers with another property. I mean it's been done before with Star Wars, and those were kind of horrible. But I watched some really good reviews about Ectotron and I picked him up.

Bot Mode-

Ectotron is a MASSIVE retool of the Combiner Wars Hot Spot/Onslaught/Pyra Magna figure. But they only share a few parts. Ectotron is a very well inspired figure. His body is primarily white, he has tan on his chest. The headsculpt is great. Ectotron has what look like Ray Stanz's goggles. He has black feet and some red details throughout his body. His back is a proton pack which the wand/gun is able to clip into. You see some of the car parts (specifically the headlights of the car) which is not a problem for me at all. I really had mold fatigue from the Hot Spot mold because I have 4 of them for different characters, but this really doesn't feel like a mold which we had before. In case you're wondering, you can't connect any Combiner Wars/POTP limbs to him. His articulation is good, but not perfect, but for a base mold which is several years old, it is perfectly fine. His head can turn. His arms can move in a normal fashion and he has good elbow bend. Thigh rotation, knee bend. There is a small black rectangle on the chest which is meant to simulate the nametag on the Ghostbuster uniform.

Ectotron's transformation is very similar to it's Combiner Wars precursors, but it isn't exactly the same. There are some extra steps in regards to the proton pack. But it is a pretty easy transformation that is just tricky enough where it is fun and feels fresh. For complexity, i rate his transformation a 5.75 out of 10. For fun, an 8 out of 10.

Vehicle Mode-

Ectotron's robot mode is great, but we came here for the Ecto-1 homage. Because of the nostalgia aspect, I enjoy Ectotron's vehicle mode more than his robot mode. In vehicle mode, Ectotron is the iconic ambulence of the Ghostbusters, the Ecto-1. Specifically the car is a 1959 Cadillac ambulance/hearse combination. When I was a kid, I really didn't have that many Ghostbusters figures, but I did have the Ecto-1. Ectotron's vehicle mode looks better than the 1980s/1990's toy. It almost looks like a model instead of a Transformer. We're getting Studio Series greatness for his vehicle mode. The car is primarily white with red fins on the back. There is equipment on the roof (which they never used in any of the movies) that turns into the proton pack in robot mode. The license plate says "Ecto-1". There is a ghostbusters logo on the doors. The wheels have silver hubcaps. As successful as the robot mode is, the vehicle mode is even better!

Ectotron has a proton wand/gun and he comes with an opaique Slimer. The Slimer figure is one of the weaker parts of this set. He's just green. I would've liked to have seen some paint on his eyes and maybe tounge. But to be fair, it is a nice thought to include since it could've been left out all together.

3rd Party Add Ons-

There are no official 3P addons, but a seller on shapeways made a PKE Meter for Ectotron which I got.

Honestly, Ectotron is one of my favorite figures of 2019. He is tremendously inspired, both in his engineering and his concept. Despite being based on a mold I have 4 other times (maybe 5 not sure), it feels fresh.

The scale of this figure is more MP than Generations. (just hear me out). To scale with Generations figures, he really should be a deluxe sized figure. So if you are displaying him with Generations figures in vehicle mode, he's just a little too big. But HasTak put out a redeco of one of the MP Optimus Primes and it scales very well with that. I don't collect MP stuff for the most part so I keep him displayed in robot mode.

If you're a child of the 80s like me, you will love this figure. Because I got Ectotron, I also wound up getting a few Ghostbusters monsters to go with him (Stay Puft and the Gozer Dog). At the time that this review is being written, I am still planning to make custom Ghostbusters from Human Alliance figures. I just need proton packs for them and I can make the customs. Ectotron feels fresh despite being a heavy retool. This is a fabulous figure. Overall I rate Ectotron 9 out of 10.
