G1 Cartoon

Powerglide was an Autobot addition in season 2, but there was no explanation where he came from.  He was one of the few Autobots who could fly consistently and was focused on a lot.  He was very full of himself and would show off his aerial abilities at every opportunity.  He also would sometimes refer to himself in the third person.  Powerglide transformed into a red glider/A10 Thunderbolt plane.

In his first appearance, Powerglide and Bumblebee were flying over the ocean.  Teletran 1 detected a strange energy signature on an island.  Powerglide breaks off from Bumblebee to do some aerial acrobatics.  He wasn’t focusing on navigation and flies right into an energy wave.  Once the two Autobots pass through the energy wave, they discover a hidden island.   The Island is an anachronism and is populated by dinosaurs.  As soon as they pass through the energy wave, they are attacked by a pterodactyl.  The dinosaur grabs Bumblebee and flies off with him.  Powerglide chases the pterodactyl to save his buddy.  Powerglide releases a few bombs and they detonate around the dinosaur.  It drops Bumblebee and Powerglide continues to fight.  He shoots his blaster at the dinosaur to scare it away.  Bumblebee crashes into a tree and Powerglide executes a perfect landing in vehicle mode.  Bumblebee’s jet pack is damaged, but Powerglide repairs it.  While Powerglide is repairing the jet pack, Bumblebee briefly explores the island.  A tyrannosaurus attacks Bumblebee and chases him back to Powerglide.  Powerglide transforms and Bumblebee climbs on top of him.  The two Autobots return to the Ark.  Powerglide takes Spike and the Dinobots to the island so the Dinobots can roam free.  Powerglide of course has no self control and continues to show off his flying skills while traveling to the island.  Powerglide actually looks down on the Dinobots for not being sophisticated enough.  When Spike is captured by a dinosaur (for the second time in 2 minutes) and is about to be eaten, Powerglide defers to the Dinobots since he “wasn’t designed to roughhouse”.  Spike is saved (of course), and he and Powerglide leave Dinobot Island to return to the Ark.

Powerglide saves Spike again, after the Decepticons throw him out of their rocket ship.  Powerglide just shows up at the end of that episode without being in it earlier.  Powerglide flies the shrunken Perceptor, Brawn, and Bumblebee to Megatron so they can enter him and disconnect the Heart of Cybertron (aka the Star Drive).  In cover of night, Powerglide delivers the three Autobots to the Decepticon camp.  The Decepticons have all passed out from their drunken over energizing.  As Powerglide is escaping, Megatron awakens and tries to shoot Powerglide, but he is too drunk.

While Powerglide is flying through the sky, he is attacked by Skywarp.  He out maneuvers Skywarp and shoots his wing off.  Then Starscream joins the fight.  In jet mode, Starscream tries to shoot Powerglide out of the sky.  He is able to lock his lasers on Powerglide. Powerglide is forced to crash to the ground.  Hoist and Grapple find him and repair him.  After Grapple and Hoist spend an extended amount of time away from the Ark, Optimus sends Powerglide to find them.  Powerglide discovers Grapple and Hoist working with the Constructicons to create a Solar Tower.  When the Autobots attack, Powerglide provides air support.  Megatron sends Ramjet to attack Powerglide.  Powerglide tries to attack Devestator from the air, but Ramjet gets in his way.  Powerglide flies close to Devestator and Ramjet follows.  When Devestator tries to swat Powerglide away, he winds up hitting Ramjet instead.  After Smokescreen makes Devestator’s foot get stuck in the Solar Tower, the Autobots combine their fire power and attack Devestator.  Devestator and the Solar Tower fall apart.

Powerglide and the other Autobots are exiled from Earth after Megatron and a human work together to tarnish the Autobots’ image.

After an airport is damaged from a battle between the Dinobots and Decepticons, Grapple, Ironhide, and Powerglide work as a team to repair the facility.  Grapple loads bricks into Powerglide’s cargo hold and he flies into the air.  Ironhide lays a layer of concrete onto the foundation and Powerglide drops the bricks.  They continue this process until the building is rebuilt.  Powerglide follows Optimus Prime to a power plant that the Decepticons are trying to control.  As the Decepticons are making Energon Cubes, the Autobots arrive to fight.  Everyone starts to malfunction and both sides return to their respective headquarters.  While Perceptor works on figuring out why the Autobots are malfunctioning, Powerglide’s head falls off.  Spike and Carly go to Cybertron, recover the Dinobots, bring back Cybertonium, and the Autobots are saved.

The Decepticons steal a device called the Voltronic Galaxer.  Optimus Prime sends out teams of Autobots to search for the device.  Powerglide and Spike search around the entire hemisphere with Carly.  They are unable to find the device or the Decepticons.  Blaster is captured by the Decepticons and they use his broadcasting ability to disrupt all communications on Earth.  Powerglide has problems landing at an airport because no one can tell him when or where it is safe to land.  Since there is no communication, Powerglide almost gets in a mid air collision with a jumbo jet.  Powerglide quickly collects himself and guides the jet so it can land safely.  Powerglide stays in the air by the airport and is joined by Optimus Prime.  Together, they help jets land safely.  All of a sudden, they are attacked by Ramjet and Thundercracker.  Powerglide starts to fall out of the air.  Before he crashes, Spike and Carly attach jet packs to Powerglide and he is able to stay in the air.  Powerglide collects Optimus Prime with an electromagnet and wants to bring him to the Ark for repairs.  The Jetpacks run out of fuel and Powerglide is forced to land by Omega Supreme.

Powerglide goes to New York City with the Autobots to be part of the Crime Buster campaign.  The Autobots are getting involved in stopping local crimes.  Powerglide is stationed inside of Sparkplug’s garage which acts as a mobile base for the Autobots.  After Optimus Prime returns from a mission with Tracks and Blaster, he sends Powerglide and Cosmos to patrol the skies of the city.   Powerglide reports that he has nothing to report.  Later that night, Powerglide discovers Starscream flying above the city.  Optimus Prime sends Cosmos to provide support to Powerglide.  When Starscream learns that he was discovered, he tries to out fly Powerglide.  Starscream circles around a building and winds up behind Powerglide.  Starscream then starts firing his lasers at the Autobot.  Cosmos joins the fight and starts firing his lasers at Starscream.  Starscream transforms and runs into a department store.  Powerglide and Cosmos transform and follow him.  Starscream stands above the Autobots on a balcony and tries to shoot them.  Powerglide discovers Starscream running up a staircase.  Starscream starts firing his blasters at the Autobots again.  He hits Powerglide and Cosmos, then makes a hole in the ceiling and flies away in jet mode.

Powerglide, Perceptor, Warpath, Seaspray, and Beachcomber travel to the beach together to explore.  Perceptor finds a unique rock and Powerglide doesn’t seen to be intrigued by that at all.  The group of Autobots are attacked by Blitzwing, Ramjet, and Thrust.  The Autobots leap into battle to defend themselves.  Powerglide transforms into glider mode to pursue Thrust.  Thrust out maneuvers Powerglide and starts to pursue him while firing his lasers.  Thrust leaves the battle and Powerglide helps Warpath fight Thrust. Thrust is covered with Electrum and is impervious to damage.   They combine their weapons to inflict maximum damage on the Decepticon.  Powerglide even shoots a laser out of his forehead.  None of the attacks cause any harm to Thrust.  Warpath makes a hole in a rock formation and Powerglide and Beachcomber follow him to escape.  Powerglide gathers outside of Omega Supreme with the Autobots so they can start a rescue mission to recover Perceptor and Seaspray.  Warpath seems excited to get into another fight, but Powerglide reminds him that it is a rescue mission.  As the Autobots get ready to depart, Powerglide mentions that he wishes Mirage was going on the mission with them.  Then Mirage decloaks himself and reveals that he was there for the last ten minutes.  As the Autobots travel to rescue their friends, they are quickly intercepted by a fleet of Decepticons with Electrum armor.  Powerglide locks on to Starscream and fires his lasers at him.  The laser blasts ricochet off of Starscream’s Electrum armor.  Starscream races towards Powerglide and shoots him.  Powerglide crashes into the ocean.  The Decepticons defeat the Autobots, but they let all of the Autobots survive.  Powerglide notifies Omega Supreme that the Decepticon armada is approaching.  The Electrum coated Decepticons make short work of Omega Supreme.  Powerglide follows the Decepticons and finds the Electrum pool.  After he discovers it, he notifies the Autobots.  Powerglide stays in the  lagoon and coats himself with Electrum.  The Electrum coated Autobots fight the Electrum coated Decepticons, but neither side is able to damage the other.  During the battle, the Decepticons’ Electrum wears off and they are forced to retreat.  Unfortunately, the beautiful valley that hid the Electrum poll was destroyed in the battle.

Cosmos returns from space and briefs Optimus Prime and Powerglide.  Cosmos discovered that the Constructicons were in space mining ore from an asteroid.  Cosmos suggests that he lures the Constructicons away and Powerglide attacks them.   Powerglide is anxious to get into battle, but Optimus Prime tells him to wait.  Powerglide travels with the Autobots to San Francisco to battle a mechanical alien dragon that is threatening the city.  Powerglide distracts the Alien Dragon while it tries to eat a building.  Eventually Omega Supreme joins the fight and sends the Alien Dragon retreating back into space.

Powerglide and the Autobots learn that Optimus Prime secretly went to Cybertron.  They have no idea why he went to Cybertron alone.  Ironhide Powerglide, and Inferno use the Decepticon Space Bridge to go to Cybertron to protect Optimus from whatever he plans to fight.   Ironhide, Powerglide, and Inferno arrive on Cybertron just as the Decepticons are celebrating the perceived destruction of Optimus Prime.  The three Autobots can’t believe that Optimus is dead.  They lash out at the Decepticons with their weapons.  Starscream fires his twin lasers at Powerglide, but Powerglide’s acrobatic flips enable him to avoid damage.  Powerglide leaps into the air and kicks Starscream to the ground.  The Decepticons retreat from battle.  The Autobots follow on foot.  Both sides seem to be evenly matched.  .  Eventually, the female Autobots Chromia and Moonracer join the fight to help their Autobot friends.  They are joined by Lancer, Greenlight, and Firestar.  Powerglide is happy to see Moonracer and asks if she is still the best shot on Cybertron.  She fires her blaster behind her head and immobilizes Ramjet and Rumble by making a pylon fall on them.  With the female Autobots’ help, the Decepticons are temporarily defeated.  The Decepticons regain control of the battle.  Shockwave transforms into gun mode and fires at the Autobots.  All of the Autobots are hanging on a ledge, trying not to fall to their ultimate doom.  The battle is won when Optimus Prime arrives with Elita-1.  Their strength drives the Decepticons back to Earth.  The Earth based Autobots bid goodbye to their female Cybertronian counterparts who refuse to relocate to Earth.

While Powerglide is on routine patrol in the skies of a city, he sees smoke in the distance.  He deploys a camera from the gun barrel in his plane mode’s nose, and sees the Coneheads attacking a penthouse.  The three Decepticons are trying to abduct a spoiled heiress named Astoria Ritz-Carlton.  The Decepticons are trying to take her away from the penthouse of her building, which houses her company, Hybrid Technologies.  Powerglide drops a rope and Astoria grabs onto it.  She climbs inside of Powerglide and he flies through the air to evade the three Decepticons.  At first, she doesn’t know Powerglide is an Autobot and thinks that the plane is going to crash because there is no pilot.  She starts pressing random buttons and Powerglide yells at her to stop.  Her random button pressing causes Powerglide’s engines to fail and he starts to plummet from the air.  Powerglide regains control and flies through the city with the Decepticons following him.  Powerglide hides under a highway overpass and the Decepticons return to their headquarters.  Once the Decepticons are gone, Powerglide transforms and reveals his true form to Astoria.  Astoria wants Powerglide to take her flying again and she leaps on him.  He throws her down and says he has more important things to do.  Astoria introduces herself to Powerglide and he is shocked to know that she runs a major company like Hybrid Technologies.  Powerglide contacts Optimus Prime, and Optimus Prime tells Powerglide that Astoria has no access to any secret technology until she is older.  Optimus hypothesizes that the Decepticons want to use her as a hostage to get secret technology from her company.  Optimus Prime orders Powerglide to guard her until things blow over.  Even though Powerglide is a complete asshole to Astoria, she starts to become smitten with him (how would that even work?  He’s a 10 foot tall robot and she is a 5 foot tall human).  Powerglide wants to bring Astoria to the Ark for her own protection, but Astoria complains she is hungry.  Powerglide takes her to an amusement park and she buys herself some hot dogs.  Powerglide wants to get her to the Ark, but she makes Powerglide take her on the carousel.  The more that Powerglide wants to take her to a safe location, the more she wants to do “date” like things with Powerglide.  Powerglide grabs her to bring her to the Autobot headquarters, and she starts to freak out that he touched her necklace.  She explains that she has sentimental attachment to the necklace because her father gave it to her before he died.  Astoria somewhat agrees to let Powerglide take her to the Autobot headquarters, but before they can leave, Thrust, Ramjet, and Dirge approach them.   Powerglide sends Astoria to hide, and then he takes out his blaster and starts firing at Dirge, Ramjet, and Thrust.  Ramjet runs away to the merry go round to avoid damage.  He lifts up the entire carousel and throws it at Powerglide.  Powerglide leaps out of the way, but one of the wooden horses falls on his head.  The three Decepticons open fire on Powerglide, but he fires back.  He hits a soda machine and a river of soda rushes towards Thrust, Ramjet, and Dirge.  Powerglide shoots the top of a tent and it covers the Coneheads like a net.  Powerglide grabs Astoria and they escape.  Powerglide transforms into plane mode and Astoria boards him.  He takes off into the air and the Coneheads soon follow.  They are able to catch up with Powerglide.  Ramjet flies into Powerglide which damages Powerglide’s wing.  Powerglide starts to crash back to the ground.  Powerglide regains control and flies into a cloud bank to lose the Decepticons.  Powerglide is forced to perform an emergency landing and transmits his coordinates to the Autobots.  They crash land in the desert and have to wait to be rescued.  Astoria notices Powerglide’s battle damage.  She rips off a piece of her dress and wraps his damaged wing and shoulder.  As Powerglide starts to admit he may have some feelings for Astoria (ew) they are attacked by the Decepticons.  The three Coneheads land and open fire on Powerglide before he can take out his blaster.  Powerglide falls in a ravine and Dirge buries him with rocks.  Astoria is taken to Megatron.  Powerglide digs himself out of the rocks just as the Coneheads are flying away.  He wants to pursue, but he is in dire need of repairs.  He tries to transform, but he just manages to crash.  He is rescued by Ratchet and Wheeljack.  They bring him back to the Autobot headquarters.  While Ratchet is performing repairs, Powerglide is impatient and wants Ratchet to work faster.  Powerglide wants to get back into the field to save Astoria.  It is really unclear if he has feelings for her, or if he is motivated by his sense of responsibility.  Before Ratchet finishes, Powerglide gets up to talk to Optimus Prime.  Teletran-1 tells Optimus and Powerglide that it discovered a Decepticon Sub Orbital Station in the Atlantic Ocean.  Powerglide transforms and goes there to save her.  An energy field surrounds the Decepticon Sub Orbital Platform, but Powerglide powers through and forces himself to reach the floating base.  Astoria sees that the energy field is preventing Powerglide from rescuing her, so she sacrifices her beloved necklace to disable the energy field.  The necklace was holding the formula that the Decepticons wanted.  Powerglide is able to reach the platform and saves Astoria.  Powerglide accidentally drops her and she starts to fall off the platform.  Powerglide catches her and he deploys a parachute from his hand and gives it to Astoria.  She refuses to jump without Powerglide at her side.  Powerglide restores navigation controls to the sub orbital platform.  He redirects it to crash into the Decepticons’ Undersea Base.  Before it crashes into the ocean, Powerglide transforms and takes Astoria to safety.  Later, he asks her why the Decepticons wanted her.  She tells him that the energy formula they were after was in the necklace her father gave her, but now it is destroyed.  Powerglide finally admits that he has feelings for Astoria and he promises to call her when he is in town next.  After Sparkplug, Ratchet, and Ironhide laugh at Powerglide, he sneaks away.  While in private he opens up his chest plate and reveals a heart made out of lights.

At least four Autobots go missing when they try to stop Blitzwing from attacking a city.  Powerglide spies on the Decepticons and finds that the missing Autobots have had their remains turned into a throne.  He contacts Smokescreen and Hoist to help rescue the deactivated Autobots.  Powerglide helps Hoist and Smokescreen navigate through the maze which the Constructicons built.  Hoist and Smokescreen are able to take the throne away from the Decepticons.  After the city is flooded, Powerglide brings Spike to safety after Optimus Prime saves him.  Powerglide deploys a ladder from his plane mode that Spike climbs up.

Powerglide learns that a human movie director is interested in putting Hoist in one of his movies.  Powerglide decides that he wants to be famous too.  He flies to the studio and does a show of his aerial acrobatics for the Director.  Even though Powerglide is a highly sophisticated robot, he can’t tell the difference between the sky and a picture of the sky.  He flies through a painting meant to be a set dropping and crashes.  Warpath, Sunstreaker and Tracks also want to be in the movie.  The Director is so impressed with their performance, he gives them each a role in his movie.  Powerglide’s role involves him crashing into a jewelry store in plane mode.  Powerglide, Sunstreaker, Tracks, and Warpath complain to Hoist that they aren’t enjoying being in the movie.  They thought they would be more than just stunt vehicles.  Hoist tries to talk to the director for the Autobots, but he is rudely dismissed.  The Autobots are so angry that they transform and storm out of the studio.  Sunstreaker, Powerglide, Tracks, and Warpath are happy to return after the Director turns the movie into a science fiction epic and promises to give the Autobots bigger roles.  Now, the Autobots are alien robots in the movie and have to wear strange rubber masks.  In one scene, the Autobots are in a fake spaceship.  By this point, the Decepticons have learned about the Autobots taking part in the movie.  Rumble replaces the pyrotechnics with real explosives.  The movie is halted and the Autobots are injured.

After Megatron captures Perceptor to cure his Cosmic Rust, Megatron is willing to release Perceptor back to the Autobots.  Perceptor is infected with Cosmic Rust and is attached to a bomb.  Powerglide goes with the Autobots to save Perceptor.

Powerglide and the Autobots watch a news report on Teletran-1.  They learn that Jazz and Cliffjumper were abducted by a group of unknown Decepticons lead by Starscream.  The Decepticons attack the Ark  The Autobots drive to cover and transform.  Megatron and the Decepticons are attacking the Autobots because someone stole personality components of Renegade Decepticons from Cybertron.  Megatron realizes that the Autobots are not responsible and the Decepticons fly away.  The Autobots are very confused about what transpired during the battle.  Powerglide asks Optimus Prime what a Renegade Decepticon is.  Optimus has no idea and they go to Teletran-1 to learn more.  The Autobots realize that Megatron and Starscream are fighting each other and Optimus Prime doesn’t want the Autobots to get involved.  He does want to find Jazz and Cliffjumper, so the Autobots start searching for them.  Powerglide is specifically tasked to search for them (What makes Powerglide so special where he has to get special orders to do what he is supposed to do?).  Powerglide discovers all of the Decepticons fighting Starscream and the Combaticons at a power station.  Powerglide notifies Optimus Prime from the air.

Perceptor travels to the Autobots who are fighting the Insecticons with Spike aboard Powerglide.  The Autobots go to Cybertron with the Space Bridge to find out why the Earth is moving closer and closer to the sun.

Powerglide survived into Season 3. His final appearance was defending the Ark from Trypticon with several other Mini Bots. They were unsuccessful and the Ark was destroyed.

Marvel G1 Comic

Powerglide was an Autobot who remained on Cybertron and was part of a resistance cell led by Perceptor.  He joins the unsuccessful search for an Autobot spy, but saves Blaster before he falls into The Smelting Pool.  Soon after, he is trapped on Earth with the rest of The Autobot resistance where he is captured and dismantled by Circuit Breaker.  Weeks later, Circuit Breaker learns the difference between Autobots and Decepticons and frees the Autobots that she captured.  Powerglide joins the Autobots living on The Ark.  He is eventually killed in battle.

IDW Transformers

As the Kimia Outpost arrives in Cybertron’s orbit, it deploys its main cannon to attack the surface.  All of the Autobots dive to cover.  Optimus Prime sends the Autobot fliers, including the Aerialbots and Powerglide, to do recon. Ultimately, Megatron gets free from Omega Supreme, gives himself new armor, and saves the Autobots from Galvatron.

Aside for being able to fly when most Autobots can't, Powerglide had some other unique abilities. He was able to deploy a camera from his cannon in vehicle mode. In one episode, it was revealed that he has human sized jetpacks in his cabin. Powerglide has been shown to mass shift. At times he could hold one person in his cabin. Other times, several people. Another attribute connected to mass shifting was that he had a cargo hold in some episodes which could hold a large quantity of materials.

Wacky Facts

Powerglide had a somewhat strange and brief relationship with a human being. He also had a more species appropriate relationship with one of the female Autobots under Elita-1's command.
