SDCC Classics Nemesis Prime Toy Review

(please note that I do not have the original figure to compare)

Class- Voyager

Commentary-

I kind of came late to the game with Classics figures. In 2006, when the line started, I was collecting Justice League Unlimited figures. I wasn't as into the movieverse as I am now, and I really didn't like the Cybertron figures, so I was in my 10 years of not collecting Transformers. So I never had a Classics Optimus Prime. To this day, I still don't have Classics Optimus Prime. He is just a bit too stylized for my tastes. But one figure I really love is my Car Robots Black Convoy (not Scourge). But as much as I really like the figure, it doesn't hold up as well as I would like it to. The other Scourge/Black Convoys that came out just didn't work for me either. The one that came out as Armada was trickling in as a KB Toys (remember them???) exclusive, too small. The redeco of RTS Deluxe Prime, too small as well. To me, Optimus (and his evil clones) should be AT LEAST Voyager sized. The Takara redeco of Titans Return, I just don't love that figure as an Optimus (or his clones). The POTP and upcoming Siege Nemesis Prime/Black Convoy/Scourge, none of them hit the right notes for me. To me, Nemesis Prime/Black Convoy/Scourge has to look like Optimus, but it has to look just a little different from Optimus so he can have his own identity. So in late 2019, I dipped into the mold for the first time and repurposed SDCC Nemesis Prime as my new Black Convoy. This is one of the first SDCC Transformer exclusives that I can think of. Because of him being from a convention over 10 years ago, he can be expensive, but on ebay there really aren't consistent prices. I've seen a complete version going for 25 and I've seen a complete version go for 85.

Bot Mode-

As I mentioned earlier, this is my first real taste of the mold. Some people swear that this is the best Optimus Prime in the last 15 years, but I respectfully disagree. It's good, but I don't love him as Optimus Prime. But the "evil" redeco I really like. He is primarily black and gray with some aqua highlights. He has Decepticon logo on his left shoulder. As a one off from Optimus, I really think he works. This figure came out about the time that Hasbro really was making an effort to have all of the figures have 5mm holds. While they started doing the practice in 2002 with Armada, it didn't really hit full saturation until Classics started. Nemesis Prime has pretty standard articulation and holds up very well with figures today, even though the mold is almost 15 years old. He has thigh swivel, natural articulation of the arms (up and down and in and out), elbow bend, knee bend, and his head can turn. One of the things I don't love about this mold is that he has a bit too much kibble on his arms. Since I don't have the Classics Optimus Prime, the mold feels fresh to me, but at the same time, he hits all the right notes to be an evil Optimus.

Transformation-

This is one of the first wave of transformers with the "poetry" of a CHUG transformation. A lot of what was done with this figure has continued until today. He has a pretty simple transformation, but it is also a very satisfying transformation. For complexity, I rate it a 4.5 out of 10. For Fun, I rate it a 6.25 out of 10.

Vehicle Mode-

Like almost EVERY Optimus Prime, This figure is the cab of a tractor trailer. It keeps the same color scheme. One of the blasters unfolds to form the smokestacks of the truck. As a whole, it tabs together very well and rolls well. The second blaster becomes the roof of the truck. Nothing really crazy or surprising here, just a well engineered truck.

Accessories-

Nemesis Prime comes with two different guns. One is a double blaster which unfolds into the smokestacks of the truck. The other is a regular blaster that folds up to be the roof of the truck. Honestly, you can use the truck without the roof blaster and it will still look cool. To me, Nemesis Prime/Black Convoy/Scourge needs a red sword. So even though it isn't an official part or suggested add on, I use the red Dr Wu Dark Star Saber with this figure. It works really well (at least to me).

3rd Party Add Ons-

So there's a very appropriate discussion of 3rd Party Add On's for this figure. The mold of Classics Optimus Prime has a few different add on kits, but to my knowledge, there is only one suggested add on kit. the Fansproject Shadow City Commander Armor. It is an evil Ultra Magnus. Fansproject has also made a red and blue armor for the Optimus and Ultra Magnus versions of this mold. Fansproject made a trailer which looks like G1 Optimus Prime's trailer for this mold, but it isn't specifically for this deco. Also, there are two other versions of the city commander armor, one to reflect Diaclone Ultra Magnus and one to reflect regular Ultra Magnus. Fansproject City Commander is one of the first big 3P releases. As I mentioned earlier, there is only one real specific upgrade for this specific figure.

Pros-

Honestly, I really like this figure as an Evil Optimus Prime. The regular deco I don't care for particularly but as Nemesis Prime, I like him a lot. He holds up really well, has not the worst articulation. The weapon assortment is good.

Cons-.

With this specific figure, I really don't have any major problems.

Grade-

I like this figure a lot as Nemesis Prime, but I really don't like the mold as Optimus. He fills a good hole and the addition of the Dr Wu Red Dark Star Saber makes him even better. While not my favorite figure in my collection, I do really like him. I give him a 7.5 out of 10 for when he came out (I think 2008). He keeps the same grade today
