Skyfire/Jetfire

G1 Cartoon

Skyfire was a Transformer who came to Earth and was trapped in ice for a very long period of time. Before coming to Earth, Skyfire and Starscream were friends and fellow explorers.  Together, they explored the galaxy and went to Earth before the war started. Strong winds (they can fly through space, but are affected by wind?) caused the two Transformers to get split up.  Skyfire crashed in the Arctic and Starscream returned to Cybertron.  Skyfire is saved by the Decepticons and repaired.  When Skyfire wakes up, he immediately recognizes his old friend Starscream.  Megatron introduces himself to Skyfire and embellishes the Decepticon mission.  He tells Skyfire that all the Decepticons want to do is to restore Cybertron so Skyfire becomes a Decepticon.  Megatron orders him and Starscream to guard the Decepticon camp.  While on guard duty, Skyfire asks Starscream if he is happy as a warrior now, instead of a scientist.  Skyfire detects the Autobots approaching and he gets ready to attack.  Skyfire thinks the Autobots are evil and attacks them.  Skyfire sees that Spike and Sparkplug are in danger and he stops attacking the Autobots to help the two humans.  Spike realizes that Skyfire is trying to help them and asks why he wears a Decepticon symbol.  Skyfire tells him that he wants to eliminate the evil Autobots.  Spike explains that the Autobots aren’t evil, the Decepticons are.  Skyfire brings them to Megatron to try to convince Spike and Sparkplug that the Decepticons are the good guys.  Skyfire watches as the two humans are confined, and tells Megatron that he promised them that they wouldn’t be hurt.  Starscream then shoots Skyfire in the hand to punish him.  Skyfire starts to think that the Decepticons may be evil.  He questions fighting, he feels his main purpose is to be a scientist.  Several Autobots are captured and Starscream wants Skyfire to execute them.  Skyfire realizes that Starscream and the Decepticons are evil, and then Starscream fires on Skyfire, hitting him in the chest.  Skyfire falls to the ground.  Starscream fires on the Autobots and thinks that he killed them, but it was all a hologram of Hound’s.  Starscream goes back to the ice caves and the Autobots reveal they are alive to Skyfire.  Skyfire is glad that the Autobots are alive, but then he passes out.  Ratchet repairs Skyfire while the rest of the Autobots are attacked by Decepticons.  Skyfire approaches as Megatron is defeated by Optimus Prime.  Megatron orders Skyfire to attack Optimus, but Skyfire rips his Decepticon insignia off of his chest.  He replaces it with an Autobot logo and joins the Autobots.  He dispatches Megatron and then Reflector.  Starscream attacks and Skyfire transforms into jet mode.  Skyfire knocks Starscream out of the sky and then fires on the Decepticon base.  He causes a rock slide, but crashes into the snow, buried again in the Arctic.

A short time later, Skyfire is rescued from his icy fate by Wheeljack and Sideswipe.  It is hinted that the entire time he was in a block of ice, he was awake and aware.  Wheeljack sends him to the Autobots base to pick up Brawn and Windcharger to go to the Andes.  The Decepticons are in the Andes.  This is the first time Skyfire is used not just as a warrior, but as a method of Autobots transportation.  Skyfire investigates an Inca Temple while the other two Autobots engage the Decepticons.  Brawn and Windcharger are under powered to fight so many Decepticons, so they jump back into Skyfire.  They plot a course back to Autobot Headquarters to get reinforcements.  Inside of Skyfire, the majority of the Autobots travel to Peru to battle the Decepticons.  Skyfire separates from the group to investigate an Inca Temple.  Thundercracker catches Skyfire trying to destroy the weapon, and then comes up with a plan to remove Starscream from being second in command of the Decepticons.  Starscream catches Thundercracker scheming to depose him and fires on him.  He misses, but hits Skyfire in the chest.  While Bumblebee and Spike are searching the Inca Temple for the Crystal of Power, they find a deactivated Skyfire. Spike repairs Skyfire while Bumblebee battles Ravage.  Ravage gets away from Bumblebee and attacks Spike, but Skyfire reactivates and grabs Ravage, preventing him from harming Spike.  Ravage runs away and Skyfire transforms into jet mode to help the Autobots.  He provides air support to the Autobots, who are pinned down by Soundwave and Reflector.  Skyfire then saves Optimus Prime and Ironhide from destruction by Megatron’s hands.  Skyfire fires on Megatron and destroys the crystal cannon.  The Decepticons are defeated and leave Peru.

The Autobots are forced to evacuate their base when the volcano that houses their ship becomes active again.  Ratchet, Huffer, and Windcharger are caught in the explosion, but Skyfire saves them from destruction.  Skyfire takes Spike, Wheeljack, and Bumblebee to Cybertron to try to save Sparkplug.  Ironhide and Brawn also go on the mission.  As they get close to Cybertron, the Decepticons fire missiles at Skyfire.  He is able to evade the missiles and brings the Autobots safely to Cybertron.

Skyfire, Wheeljack, and Trailbreaker rescue Spike, Bumblebee and Brawn from the Decepticons on Cybertron.  Shockwave fires his cannon at Skyfire.  Skyfire dodges the blast and shoots Shockwave.  Shockwave is thrown into a computer and it explodes.  Skyfire provides cover fire so the Autobots can escape.  Shockwave transforms into his space gun mode and fires with his full force at Skyfire.  He misses, but makes the door big enough for Skyfire to fit through.  Skyfire transforms and follows the other Autobots.  Skyfire catches up with the other Autobots on Cybertron.  When the automated Decepticon cannons and two Decepticon Tetrajets attack the Autobots, Skyfire provides air support (I really don’t understand why they just didn’t get inside of Skyfire and return to Earth).  Two Decepticon drones start following the Autobots, Skyfire draws them away so the Autobots can reach Wheeljack’s laboratory.  The Autobots restore Sparkplug’s mind, and as they are escaping the Decepticon base, more automated cannons fire at them.  Skyfire destroys the cannons and the Autobots board him to return to Earth.  Skyfire arrives on Earth just in time.  Optimus Prime and the Autobots are fighting on a tropical island and they are losing the battle.  From inside of Skyfire, Wheeljack uses a device to free the Decepticons’ control of the slaves.  Megatron transforms into gun mode and shoots Skyfire.  Skyfire is forced to crash.  After the Autobots inside of him join the battle, he transforms to fight.  Megatron escapes aboard his ship with a lot of Energon Cubes and the Decepticons follow.  Earth is saved when the Autobots destroy Megatron’s ship and the explosion from the Energon Cubes knocks Cybertron out of Earth’s orbit.  The Autobots are victorious and Megatron is thought to be dead.

Skyfire takes Bumblebee, Windcharger, and Brawn to Bali to investigate Insecticon attacks.  Spike also joins the Autobots and tells Sparkplug to tell Optimus Prime they will most likely need back up.  Skyfire takes the team of Autobots to a farm that is being attacked by Insecticons.  Once the Autobots exit Skyfire, the Insecticons attack with fireball launchers.   The Insecticons’ attacks aren’t powerful enough to harm the Autobots.  The Autobots think it is going to be a very simple battle because they have the Insecticons outnumbered and out gunned.  The three Insecticons work together to create an army of clones which overwhelm the Autobots.  One of the Kickback clones knocks Skyfire to the ground by kicking him with his powerful rear legs.  The Insecticons rush at the four Autobots and Spike, forcing them to retreat.  The Insecticons follow the fleeing Autobots into a corn field.  The Autobots are trying to hide while they wait for reinforcements.  Shrapnel fires a sphere from his hand that sprays shrapnel across the field.  Windcharger uses his magnetic powers to deflect the shrapnel and protect the Autobots.  The Autobots are given a brief respite when Megatron and the Decepticons arrive to recruit the Insecticons.  Skyfire wants to retreat, but he can’t transform into jet mode.  Kickback’s attack damaged his transformation functions.  Before the Decepticons can attack, Optimus Prime arrives with back up.  When the Autobots start attacking the Decepticons and Insecticons, together they fly away.  After the battle, Wheeljack repairs Skyfire and he can transform again.  Skyfire transforms to chase the Decepticons.  While he is chasing the Decepticons, the Insecticons split off and attack Skyfire.  Kickback fires on Skyfire, but it doesn’t seem to be powerful enough to damage him.  Bombshell and Shrapnel attack while in beast mode and clamp onto Skyfire’s wings.  He is saved when Wheeljack flies into the air (when did Wheeljack gain that ability?) and shoots the Insecticons with his shoulder rocket.  Skyfire follows the Insecticons to an oil refinery where the Decepticons are making Energon Cubes.  Once Megatron sees him, Megatron fires furiously at Skyfire but misses.  Skyfire then sees the Insecticons consuming oil on the side of an oil tanker.  Skyfire knocks the Insecticons off of the ship with his wings.  The rest of the Autobots make it to the refinery.  The Autobots and Decepticons fight.  The battle ends when the Insecticons betray the Decepticons and steal their Energon Cubes.  The Decepticons fly into the air to chase the Insecticons.

Skyfire helps Ironhide find Carly after Laserbeak captured her.

The Autobots receive a warning from Teletran 1 that a rocket is being attacked by the Decepticons.  The rocket is carrying a satellite which can be used as an energy source.  The Autobots plan to go to defend the rocket but they start to become evil.  Teletran 1 detects “evil” in the base, and that evil is the Autobots.  Megatron and Starscream snuck into the Autobot base and altered their recharging station to turn the Autobots evil.  Under Megatron’s orders, Skyfire attacks military planes to clear the skies for the Decepticons.  The restored Autobots and Sparkplug hunt for Skyfire.  They figure that if they can restore Skyfire, his speed will be an asset to stop Megatron and the evil Autobots.  Hound shoots one of Sparkplug’s devices at Skyfire and restores him.  The Autobots use Skyfire to travel to an Air Force Base that Optimus Prime, Prowl, and Brawn are attacking.  After all of the Autobots are restored, they travel inside of Skyfire to stop the Decepticons from leaving Earth with an energy gathering satellite.  Skyfire reaches the rocket base in time for the Autobots to see the rocket fly into the air with the Decepticons inside of it.  Optimus Prime and Ratchet jump out of Skyfire to engage the rocket.  Jazz’s super loud stereo saves the day when it causes the Decepticons to crash back to Earth.

Skyfire is tasked with transporting Hound and Spike to the ocean so they can investigate oil tankers that are being controlled by the Decepticons.  The Decepticons are guiding the ships to their undersea base and pumping the oil out.  When they reach the Decepticon base, they see that it is surrounded by a green force field.  Hound gets an idea on how they can enter the Decepticon base.  Jetfire lands on the deck of one of the oil tankers (in Robotech Gerwalk mode) and Hound asks the captain of the ship to hide them.  While staying hidden, Hound, Skyfire, and Spike are able to get through the force field.  Hound, Jetfire, and Spike emerge from the cargo hold of one of the tankers.  They attack Megatron and he calls for back up.  Jetfire shoots at Soundwave, sending him flying into the air.  Laserbeak grabs Spike with his talons and flies away.  The Autobots throw down their weapons to protect Spike.  Hound, Spike, and Skyfire are detained in a cell guarded by Rumble and Ravage..  The Autobots’ weapons and ammo are taken away from them.  Spike starts to make plans to escape.  Spike finds an electromagnet in the rubble in their cell.  He activates it which causes Rumble and Ravage to be immobilized.  Skyfire smashes the door and the Autobots escape with Spike from their cell.  They work together to disable the force field so the rest of the Autobots can get to the Decepticon oil platform.  Skyfire lures Frenzy away from the controls and Hound uses his shoulder rocket to destroy them.  Optimus Prime leads a team of Autobots to attack the oil platform once the shield is disabled.  The Decepticons face defeat and Megatron sets off explosives in the oil platform.  All of the Autobots escape except Optimus Prime.  He finds Hound, Skyfire, and Spike before the platform sinks to the ocean.  Once Optimus helps them above deck, Skyfire transforms and takes the Autobots and Spike to dry land.

Marvel G1 Comic

Jetfire is the first Autobot to be “born” on Earth.  Early on in the Marvel Comics, Shockwave decapitated Optimus Prime and kept the head with him as a hostage.  Not only to deter the Autobots from attacking him, but to use the Creation Matrix inside of Optimus to create a new Decepticon army.  What Shockwave didn’t know was, Optimus transferred the matrix into young Buster Witwicky.  Jetfire was built to be the air commander of the new Decepticon army.  Optimus Prime used the last of the traces of Creation Matrix energy to give life to The Constructicons, so initially, Shockwave controlled Jetfire via remote control.  Shockwave's first command is that Jetfire brings him Buster.  Jetfire attacks Bluestreak, Bumblebee, Buster, Sparkplug, and Buster’s girlfriend Jessie.  Jetfire damages Bumblebee who then tells Buster that he can defeat Jetfire by using the Creation Matrix.  Buster mentally takes apart Jetfire and puts him back together, gaining control over the sophisticated machine.

Jetfire doesn’t have a personality at this time, but Buster takes him for a joyride in jet mode. He is attacked by Air Force jets and automatically fights back, retaining some of the programming Shockwave gave him.  Buster passes out and Jetfire reverts back to Shockwave’s control.  Shockwave uses Jetfire to spring a trap on The Autobots and when Jetfire returns, Shockwave orders him to destroy Optimus Prime’s head.  Buster gains control again over his Matrix powers and Jetfire falls under Buster’s control again, using him to attack Shockwave.  Buster and Jetfire then take the real Optimus Prime’s head and reunites it with his body, saving the Autobots.

Optimus regains The Creation Matrix from Buster and gives Jetfire a spark along with several new Autobots.  Jetfire then is only shown once in a while.  First shown as an assistant to Ratchet in repairing Wheeljack and other damaged Autobots.  When Bumblebee ventures out on his own and is damaged, Jetfire saves Bumblebee before The Decepticons can destroy him.  Jetfire is injured and Bumblebee saves the Autobot who meant to save him.  Bumblebee protects Jetfire until Optimus Prime and the rest of The Autobots arrive.

When Optimus takes a convoy of Autobots to the Decepticon base to learn the secret of Devestator, they are stopped by US Military.  Optimus uses Jetfire as a distraction to get through.

Later, Jetfire is sent by Optimus to investigate a rumor that seven Autobots used The Space Bridge to come to Earth.  He can’t find them at first but finds a trace of their fuel on the ground.

After Optimus Prime dies, Jetfire is part of a meeting organized by Perceptor.  He is under consideration for leadership of The Autobots.  The conclave agrees that each of the attendees of the meeting has A quality which made Optimus a great leader, but no one has all of the qualities.  The meeting is disrupted by Grimlock who demands that the Autobot council makes him leader since he is strongest.

Jetfire is relegated to being a background character for a very long time.  His next major appearance was when he leads the Aerialbots in New York City to fight Starscream, who was enhanced by energy from the Underbase.  The Aerialbots are quickly knocked out, but Jetfire continues to fight.  After Starscream kills several other Autobots and the Seacons, Jetfire is killed by the mutated Starscream.

Abilities

Skyfire was much bigger than the standard Autobot. He could transport numerous Autobots inside of his vehicle mode at once.

Wacky Facts

The names of Skyfire and Jetfire are interchangable depending on the media.
The original G1 Jetfire toy was one of the few molds that wasn't originally a diaclone. He was originally a Macross mold which caused a bunch of legal problems.
