Takara Legends Super Ginrai

Class- Leader

Commentary-

I'm going to say this a lot, but Powermaster Optimus Prime is my favorite Optimus Prime from a conceptual view. It's awesome, you have Optimus who turns into a robot, then the robot combines with the trailer to be a SUPER Robot. I've had easily 3 or 4 G1 Powermaster Optimus Primes through out my life. In Japan, Powermaster Optimus Prime wasn't Optimus Prime, he was Ginrai in Masterforce. I only saw a few episodes of Masterforce and it didn't get to Ginrai yet, so I am not an expert on Ginrai. The original Titans Return Powermaster Optimus Prime was... very meh. He was missing a lot of the key concepts of the G1 toy. First, he had those horrible Ultra Magnus hands which have difficulty holding anything. He didn't have the small cab which transformed into a small Optimus Prime. I was very fast to pass on it. Well, Perfect Effect released a Jinrai cab and in about a week, I tracked down most of the components (Minus the last upgrade kit) and once I got it in my hands, I was DELIGHTED. Super Ginrai is a retool of the Titans Return Powermaster Optimus Prime and was later released in the US in a 5 pack under the name Magnus Prime. Both toys are identical. Now, for a while, this not only was my favorite Optimus but my favorite figure. But that is more because of the nostalgic factor than the actual toy.

Robot Mode

Super Ginrai has a lot of very important retooling from Titans Return Powermaster Optimus Prime. The chest is different, the legs are different (so they can combine with Godbomber), and the hands are different. Also, there are some paint differences. As successful the Super Robot version is, it lacks a VERY important detail, the core robot. Luckily Perfect Effect fixed that. The modification of Super Ginrai to use the Perfect Effect cab takes about 2 minutes. All you have to do is unscrew a screw that holds the cab in and then pull off the chest and replace the chest with a new part. I gotta say it, even though I absolutely adore this figure, I would not have gotten it without the PE Jinrai cab. So lets get into the details of the robot mode (see the review for the Jinrai cab here). Super Ginrai is tall, he's actually taller than the pretools of Powermaster Optimus Prime and Combiner Wars Ultra Magnus because of the new tooling. He has all the basic details of a traditional Optimus Prime. Red torso with windows in the chest. Blue legs. Gray upper legs, blue lower legs. He is a bit boxy, but it isn't bad. His articulation is good, but he feels a bit static due to his engineering. His arms can move up and down and in and out. He has great elbow bend and upper arm swivel. His head (I use the PE one which you can read the review here) is a Titan Master with a helmet, but as I JUST mentioned, I use the improved Perfect Effect PC15 head which is an improvement and isn't a headmaster. You don't have to use the PC Head on either Super Ginrai or the PE Jinrai cab, but the PE one looks a lot better and is VERY easy to install. He has 5mm hands. There are ports on his upper arms which you can plug blasters into. There are flaps from vehicle mode which are way too visible in robot mode and they are on a friction joint so they fall off easily. I actually lost the panels on my FIRST Super Ginrai, but my second one still has the flaps. (I keep one in Super Ginrai mode and one in God Ginrai mode, the God Ginrai I keep the original head and cab). I love this figure, but it does have some issues which I mentioned. Oh, he also has ankle tilt.

Transformation-

I really like this transformation. It is complex enough where it is fun, but it isn't infuriating. The only part that bothers me is the transformation of the feet. It just has to be absolutely precise and if it isn't, the figure won't stand on it's own With the PE Cab, the transformation is about 95% the same. For complexity, I rate it a 7 out of 10. For fun, I rate it an 8.25 out of 10.

Vehicle Mode-

Aside for one stupid nitpicky detail, the vehicle mode is near perfect. It is a traditional tractor trailer. The cab is red and the trailer is gray. There are ports on the trailer where you can attach weapons to. Now here's the one detail I don't like. There is a ladder on the cab which is way too small. Most transformers are kinda sorta in the same scale. To simplify the scale (because I don't know specifically what it is), figure a Titan Master is the height of an average human. The ladder implies that humans are way smaller. Yes its a nitpick, and it isn't relevant if you have the Perfect Effect Jinrai cab which I do.

Accessories

Super Ginrai comes with some good accessories. Two black and blue guns which are hand guns and two light gray double blasters for his shoulders. Honestly, I don't use the Double Guns in his hands though. They are the irritating chair guns which a lot of Titans Return figures have, but I love them for God Ginrai. The two double blasters are great for the shoulders, but I flip them over so you don't see the chair part.

3rd Party Add Ons-

There are several 3P add ons specifically for this set and there are two which are meant for other figures that I use.

Official there is the Perfect Effect ones which you can check out on the main page of the review.

Unofficial, I use the Dr Wu Blue star saber and the Matrix Workshop Leader sized Optimus Prime gun. Oh, I also arm Super Ginrai (and God Ginrai) with the gun that comes with PE Jinrai Cab.

Pros-

If you're a fan of the Marvel G1 Book (which I am) this is your perfect Powermaster Optimus Prime figue (granted you have the add on kit). He is soooo much fun and has great play value for a kid if you don't add on the Perfect Effect cab. Most of the problems with the american version are resolved.

Cons-.

The scale issue, the fact that you really need upgrade kits (yes plural) to make him a really good figure, specifically the fact that there is no small Optimus Prime/Detachable Truck Cab.

Grade-

Before I got Earthrise Optimus Prime, this was my GOTO Optimus Prime. He's still a great figure and I'm so happy that I have more than one of him. But he does have issues. If you don't have the PE Jinrai cab, honestly, he is lacking and feels incomplete. Without the cab, I rate him a 5.5 out of 10. With the cab and PC15 Upgrade kit, I rate him a 9 out of 10

Retools and Repaints-

Combiner Wars Ultra Magnus (pretool) (had it, but I got rid of it when I got Siege Ultra Magnus I may get another one though)

Titans Return Powermaster Optimus Prime (pretool) (will never get)

Titans Return Magnus Prime (basically the same exact figure just released in the US)

Primative Optimus Prime (redeco con exclusive) (may get this down the line if I can track down the black Jinrai cab)

Please note that all of the pictures for Super Ginrai have the PE Cab
