Titans Return Alpha Trion Toy Review

Class - Voyager

The character of Alpha Trion always interested me. A mysterious sage like Autobot who eventually in other continuities we learn was one of the original 13 primes. Honestly, when I first saw the reveal of Alpha Trion, I was planning to skip him. He didn't look enough like the Alpha Trion I knew. Oh yeah, he also had a beast mode which was weird to me. But one day when Titans Return was in stores, I had a bit of extra money and I wanted to pick up SOMETHING so I picked up Alpha Trion.

Bot Mode-

If you're expecting a G1 Alpha Trion, this figure may not be for you. But if you have an open mind, I'm pretty sure you will like this figure. He is incredibly unique looking. He has some organic parts through out his body. Alpha Trion's head is really well sculpted with a sage like beard and yellow eyes. Like many Autobots, he has a silver face. When you plug the Titan Master into robot mode, two panels pop up which fill out the head, but I try to keep mine down so you get more articulation. For the most part, Alpha Trion is red and purple with some gray and silver. His hands are light gray. Yes, there is a fair amount of Beast Mode kibble on him, but it doesn't bother me. He has a small "skirt" which adds to his noblity. His hands are actually somewhat open which I like because it makes better poses, and f course they are 5mm hands. I don't know what it symbolizes, but he has a small red globe in his chest. Looks cool. Vector Prime has the same thing going for him. His articulation is good, but not perfect. As I mentioned earlier, his head can move left and right, but the filler can reduce it a little. HIs arms can move up and down in and out, elbow bend, bicep swivel. The skirt holds back a little bit of forward leg movement but there is side kicking ability.

Transformation to Vehicle mode-

Since Alpha Trion's vehicle mode is kind of abstract, his transformation at first is a bit harder than a typical Titans Return figure. Hear me out. If I'm transforming lets say TR Astrotrain, I know I am transforming him into a train or a space shuttle, so I have a better idea of what it will look like. Alpha Trion's vehicle mode is a weird vague spacecraft. So I had to use the instructions the first few times. Also, there is some partsforming which is an issue for some people, but if it isn't done too much, it doesn't bother me that much. For complexity, I rate it a 7.25 out of 10. For fun a 5.25 out of 10.

Vehicle Mode-

Alpha Trion's vehicle mode is an oddly defined spacecraft. Since we never saw him transform in the cartoon, I am fine with this. But it's really hard to describe what it looks like. Its like a block with stuff on it. Almost like an aircraft carrier, but not so much. He keeps the same color scheme and adds an orange hatch on top for his Titan Master. You have to plug his weapon into the vehicle to complete it. Honestly, its fine, especially that we never saw him Transform ever in any show, but it feels a little called in.

Transformation to Beast Mode-

The transformation into beast mode is a lot easier and more fun. It is a lion so you have a general idea of what it is meant to look like when it is done, so it is more intuitive. For complexity, I rate the transformation a 5.75 out of 10. For fun, a 7.25 out of 10.

Beast Mode-

Alpha Trion's beast mode is a fantasy lion with a horn. Is that a manticore? Not sure. He keeps the same color scheme, and I really love how the mane is gunmetal gray. It adds to the alien look as well as that he is truly a robot. The articulation in beast mode is fine. He isn't doing many dynamic poses, but for display he looks good. Just his legs can move slightly. I would've liked to have seen a little more articulation in the legs. Specifically the legs can only bend at the joint, I would've liked to have seen a joint in the upper legs where the legs can extend out. I don't know if you consider this parts forming or weapon storage, but AT's sword becomes the tail in beast mode. In comparison to his vehicle mode, I like his beast mode a lot more.

Like every Titans Return figure, Alpha Trion is a headmaster/titan master. So that means his head can transform into a small robot. He comes with a great sword and like every other Titans Return figure, he comes with a weapon that can also be used as a chair for his titan master. The only reason I still have that weapon is because you need it for vehicle mode.

3rd Party Add Ons-

Dr Wu made a sword for Alpha Trion. I don't have it which is strange because I have A LOT of Dr Wu stuff, but I just never thought it was different enough from the sword that came with the figure to get it. I vaguely remember seeing that there was a cape for AT, but I don't know if that was just a custom or a real add on kit. I looked online and I couldn't find anything definitive. There is also a Dr Wu Staff which looks amazing and I have it.

Good accessory (the sword). Interesting looking figure in robot mode.

Crappy vehicle mode.

What would Seth have done differently?

Don't get me wrong, I like this figure, not as much as other figures, but I do like it. But if it were up to me, I would've made him 100% different. No beast mode, a better defined vehicle mode, and a robot mode that looks like G1 Alpha Trion. But that doesn't mean I don't like the figure, I do, but its more that there aren't many options for an alpha trion

Alpha Trion is a good figure, but far from perfect. An easy skip if you are waiting for a perfect Alpha Trion, but for what he's worth, he's not horrible. i I rate him 5.5 out of 10

Retools and Repaints-

Titans Return Broadside (heavy retool/engineering share) I don't plan on getting Broadside, I just don't like the character

Titans Return Tidal Wave (retool of Broadside) Maybe down the road I'll get him

Takara Legends Lio Convoy (Redeco with new head)
